How does the heating and cooling system work in a house?

28 January 2022 Contributed by: admin

HVAC system, also known as the heating, ventilation, and cooling system, is one of the major requirements in every house. The HVAC system is equipped to work as a cooling and heating system. Hence, there won’t be any need to get an air conditioner and a room heater separately for different seasons.

However, most people think that the HVAC system is only suitable for commercial places like malls, offices, large buildings, theatres, auditoriums, etc. What they don’t know is that now, the heating and cooling system is available for residential places as well. Yes, there are several differences in the residential HVAC systems as compared to the commercial ones, but the operation of the appliance is the same- heating the rooms during the colder season and cooling the area in the summers.

If you aren’t aware of the HVAC systems in detail, do not worry any further. The forthcoming article will describe the basic facts you need to know about the cooling and heating systems for residential purposes.

What are the two major parts of the HVAC system?

A residential HVAC system can be divided into two major parts: the heating and cooling systems. Each part will have its component through which the temperature inside your house will be controlled. Before you learn about the working of the heating and cooling system, we first need to focus on the different parts of the HVAC system combined.

  1. Furnace: Its main operation is to burn the fuel from which the heat is generated and then distributed in the entire house. For the furnace to work properly, four sub-components are added- burner with a fuel, heat exchangers, a blower, and a flue/exhaust.
  2. Air conditioner: This component extracts the heat out of the air circulating inside the room and expelling it outside in the environment. Removal of the heat from air reduces the internal temperature.
  3. Heat pump: The pump is added to HVAC systems to reduce the overall power consumption. It acts dually- transferring the room’s heat outside to make the interiors cool and vice versa.
  4. Ducts and ventilation: The ventilation system ensures that the hot or cold air is thrown outside properly. It allows the exchange of energy between the interior of your house and outsides, thereby reducing power consumption. On the other hand, the ducts transfer the heated or cold air to different zones of the house.
  5. Thermostat: Thermostats are the main controlling device when you are installing the HVAC system. As this heating and cooling system works combined, you can use the thermostat to change the temperature. The HVAC system will work according to the set temperature in this device.

    Working on the HVAC system?

It will be easier to understand its working since you are now aware of the major components present in the heating and cooling system.

  1. Since the HVAC system is connected with the thermostat, it works according to the temperature set in the device. Once you set a temperature, the HVAC system coils will either become hot or cold.
  2. A pump draws in the room’s air inside the HVAC system, passing through the coils. If the coils are freezing, the air will become colder. And if the coils are hot, the air will become hotter.
  3. Once the air is heated or cooled, it is expelled out into the room, altering the temperature.
  4. The excess heat which is taken out of the air for cooling it down is released into the environment through the ventilation room of the heating and cooling system.

Conclusion

Installing an energy-efficient HVAC system in your home will reduce your overall power consumption. So, if you want to control the interior temperature for comfort, you need to install the best heating and cooling system at the earliest.
